In a rapidly transforming world where uncertainty has become the new normal, the tourism industry stands at a crossroads. For decades, sustainability was heralded as the cornerstone to achieving long-term successful and responsible development of global tourism. However, in an era marked by climate crises, shifting consumer behaviors and mindsets as well as unprecedented global disruptions, we must ask: Is sustainability still the key to securing a resilient tourism industry or do we need to rethink our approach?
The new Visit East Africa – Feel the Vibe brand is a commitment to a sustainable tourism experience and will be launched at the event. Matthias will give a presentation on ‘Embracing Sustainability in Promotion of Tourism: A Global Perspective’ and take part in a panel discussion with tourism representatives from the region.
The session highlights the crucial contribution of women in shaping the tourism sector and aligns with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (BMZ) commitment to feminist development policy. Leaders of the tourism industry together with the German Government will commit to advancing gender equality and empower women within their organizations by endorsing the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), co-founded by UN Women and the UN Global Compact. The WEPs initiative is driven by collective action aimed at dismantling discriminatory structures, enhancing women’s rights, resources, and representation. This commitment marks a significant step toward fostering sustainable and inclusive practices in the global tourism industry.
