What Does a Sustainable Cruise Model look like?

3 March 2026, City Cube / Room R 12,  12:30 – 13:30
Our team on stage: Diana Körner & Matthias Beyer

Cruise tourism is booming, yet for small island states like Seychelles, its environmental and economic impacts remain under-researched and insufficiently addressed. The Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Foundation (SSTF), with support from SeyCCAT and partners such as mascontour, has gathered representative primary data on the direct economic and environmental impacts of cruise activities in Seychelles’ Inner Islands. This panel will share these key findings and explore how cruise destinations can balance economic benefits with environmental stewardship.

The Climate Adaptation Gap in Tourism: From Risk to Resilience

5 March 2026, Hall 7.1a Orange Stage, 11:00 – 12:00
Our team on stage: Matthias Beyer & Thomas Frommhold

Tourism destinations worldwide are already experiencing the consequences of climate change – from heatwaves and water scarcity to storms, floods, and biodiversity loss. But how well are they prepared to adapt? This session will present the exclusive results of a new global survey on climate adaptation in tourism, conducted jointly by ITB and the international consultancy mascontour. The findings shed light on how destinations across continents assess climate risks, which adaptation measures are being put in place, and where the main barriers and needs for support remain. The session will discover what it really takes for tourism to weather the climate challenge – and explore whether the sector is ready to move from risk to resilience.

Safeguarding What We Sell: Embedding Biodiversity in Tourism’s DNA

5 March 2026, Hall 7.1a Orange Stage, 12:00 – 13:00
Our team on stage: Matthias Beyer

Biodiversity is the foundation of thriving destinations – yet tourism can both protect and endanger it. What role should our industry play in safeguarding nature’s richness? Which drivers for biodiversity loss must be addressed in own value chains, especially when it comes to F&B offer? And how can nature protection be embedded strategically into tourism operations? Members of Futouris have joint forces with WWF Germany and mascontour to move from theory to action: developing biodiversity protection strategies for their value chains, identifying hot spots for action and launching effective, pioneering projects that reduce negative impacts and restore biodiversity. This session will share insights, inspire practical steps, and explore how tourism companies can position themselves as leaders in nature protection – delivering real impact while strengthening their resilience. Join the discussion to shape a future where travel sustains the diversity of life it depends on.
