PPSF Project successfully concludes and launches Sustainable Tourism Practices Handbook

After two years of collaboration, research, workshops, mentoring, and peer learning, the project „Preserving the Past – Securing the Future (PPSF): A Sustainable Approach to Cultural and Remembrance Heritage“ has successfully come to an end.

The project brought together museums, memorials, remembrance sites, and cultural heritage organisations from across Europe to explore how sustainability can be integrated into the management and daily operations of institutions dedicated to preserving the memory of the Second World War.

Throughout the project, participants took part in workshops hosted in Normandy (France), Gdańsk (Poland), and Lucca (Italy), where they exchanged experiences, shared good practices, and developed practical solutions related to environmental, social, economic, and governance aspects of sustainability.

One of the key outcomes of PPSF is the publication of the Sustainable Tourism Practices Handbook, a practical resource designed specifically for organisations working in the cultural heritage and remembrance sectors.

The handbook brings together:

  • Key findings from the PPSF market analysis
  • Good practice examples from across Europe
  • Practical sustainability tools and templates
  • Recommendations for museums, memorials, and interpretation centres
  • Guidance on topics such as community engagement, accessibility, climate action, fundraising, digital transformation, and impact measurement

The publication aims to support heritage organisations in becoming more resilient, accessible, and sustainable while continuing to preserve and communicate the stories that matter.

A Strong European Partnership

The success of the PPSF project was made possible through the collaboration of a committed European partnership. The project was led by Liberation Route Europe (LRE), bringing together expertise from the remembrance, cultural heritage, and tourism sectors.

A special thank you goes to our partner organisations:

  • Juno Beach Centre (France)
  • Fondazione Campus Studi del Mediterraneo (Italy)
  • Liberation Route Europe (LRE) as Project coordinator

We would like to thank all participants, partners, and contributors who helped make this project a success.
