New White Paper: Climate Adaptation in Tourism – From Risk Awareness to Resilient Tourism Management

Climate adaptation is rapidly becoming one of the most important strategic challenges facing the tourism sector.

To better understand how destinations and tourism stakeholders worldwide are responding to climate change, mascontour conducted a global survey in cooperation with ITB Berlin. The resulting white paper, “Climate Adaptation in Tourism – From Risk Awareness to Resilient Tourism Management,” provides valuable insights from 172 tourism professionals representing 60 countries across all continents.

The findings show that climate impacts are increasingly recognised as a major threat to tourism destinations. However, despite growing awareness, many destinations still struggle to translate climate adaptation strategies into effective implementation. Governance challenges, fragmented responsibilities and insufficient funding emerge as the most significant barriers.

The publication highlights:
✔ The most relevant climate risks facing tourism destinations
✔ Current adaptation practices and their perceived effectiveness
✔ Key barriers and support needs
✔ Practical recommendations for destinations, businesses and policymakers
✔ mascontour’s Resilient Tourism Management Framework

The report offers valuable guidance for tourism organisations seeking to strengthen their resilience and prepare for a changing climate.
